Bet you never thought you'd see the day

Satchel is finished and photgraphed. I started it in September and today, February 28, it's on the blog. One day before Red Todd Kidd's and my anniversary. Oh yeah, I'm good.

I do like this pattern because it lends itself well to adaptation. YOu see I added and I-cord edging to the strap (pain in my ass! had to do it TWICE!) because it just didn't look finished without it. I also added that skull and cross bones intarsia to the pocket. My first intarsia and oh, does it show.

Things I like about this pattern:
-very simple
-no side seams
-looks finished and nice
can be adapted easily

Things I don't like about this pattern:
-knitting from two balls of yarn at the same time is annoying especially if you have kids and have to get up frequently
-the strap didn't look right with the rest of the design

Changes I'd make if I did this again include:
-an adjustable strap involving a belt buckle or something
-sewing machine finishing, none of this hand sewing business
-longer flap closure so the pockets don't show
-a yarn that's not so hairy (I used Cascade 220 for the grey same as the pattern called for and Cascade Eco Wool for the black trim), I don't know whether to put books in this thing or stuff it and give it to the kids to hug

(The last photo has the most correct color)

When Rednecks* go to Law School

Gimme a break, I almost died.

I got this message from Aspiring Crazy Cat Lady:
"It's been over 10 days. Don't you care about your fans? Damnit."

And the answer is no. I don't care about my fans because I don't have any. What I have are a few regular commenters who are possibly (probably) as disturbed as I am and thus, keep coming back. I care about those crazy few a great deal. I'm very sorry if I have offended the crazy contingent by my lack of posts lately but I have a really great excuse.

Last Tuesday, much after I posted about Valentine's Day, I had a nice scarry visit to the hospital. I'm not going to go into a lot of details because most of you have head all about it either from me or on the knitty board so suffice to say, I'm mostly better now. I just haven't felt much like knitting or blogging since then. I haven't picked up the needles since I've been home and as you can see this is my first post. I'm sure I'll snap out of my funk pretty soon and hopefully you crazies who like me will still be out there.

I'm planning the next story installment so hopefully it'll be up right on time next Wednesday.

Much love,
Sarah

Happy Valentine's Day

It's a Hallmark holiday but have a good one anyway.

This morning was another doctor appointment for Baby Girl and she passed with flying colors. No more iron supplements! The anemia is gone. After the appointment I was in the car with my Grandma and she was telling me that she still had a valentine my grandpa gave her when they were twelve. How cool is that? She said that the card read: "I'd be a total sap if I didn't want you in my lap". Kinda racy for back then, eh?

SP 6 is underway

It's secret pal time again! I'm doing the knitty.com SP6 (the one I created the humorous controversy buttons for months ago, hey, I think I'll put one of those up!) and I just got my first package on Monday. Yipee!

As it turns out my SP is from the UK and has sent some interseting treats. In my package there you can see I received a delicious dark chocolate bar, some stitch markers that spell "knitting", A felted cuff (very cute!), some brushed alpaca that she dyed herself (the color isn't quite so riotous in person), and abag of Rice Cakes flavored (or should I say "flavoured"?) with "yeast extract" which she explained is marmite. EEK! Marmite! I'm afraid!

Anyhoo, I'm plotting what will become of that alpaca even as we speak. I'm also trying to think of some thing I should make for my SP which of course I won't post about until the round is over so she won't find me out. I think I have her fooled pretty well so far, I don't want to blow it!

It was 80 degrees yesterday. I'm not going anywhere with this, just thought I'd mention it.

My brain is wandering. I know there was something else I wanted to post about today. What was it? Seriously, what was was it? Eh, whatever. I guess I'll post about it tomorrow!

Story? On a Wednesday? No Way!

(Last sentence of last entry) I'm off track again, I'm sorry. Where was I? Oh, my father had decided I would marry one of his war buddies and I was about to bolt...

Chapter the Third in which Plans are Set in Motion and Much Theivery Occurs

The man they had chosen for me was nice enough but he was easily three times my age. I think they chose him because he was the most tolerant man my father knew and he had been a widower for some time. He already had his heirs established, they chose him because they didn't think I could screw up his life. They underestimated me.

Now, I suppose I should take a moment here, Beatrix, to say that my parents didn't hate me. I know it seems like I was only a problem to them but that's not how it was. I think in a small way I reminded my father of himself a bit. I think I may have even been his favorite. The thing was, I really was a troublemaker. I was constantly causing problems. It's a wonder my parents didn't send me off as soon as they could.

Anyhow they had made tennative arrangements to marry me off and I wasn't about to do it. I stole some supplies from my father's army: a bedroll, water bags, some better knives, saddle bags, a short sword, some of the pages' clothes and such. It took all my best trickery and the better part of two months to get it all. I packed my treasures in the saddle bags, those I couldn't bear to part with: my knitting needles, a few bits of ribbons and some combs for my rebellious hair, a few special trinkets and jewelry (if I had to I could use it to barter with), and one dress. Once I knew I had everything I needed (apart from the food and water which would be easy enough to come by when the timing was right) I set about the two most difficult parts of my task: contacting Penryn and securing a horse.

As it turned out contacting Penryn was easier than it should have been. By sheer coincidence the message I sent went by way of a messenger with a serious drinking problem. He ran into her in a tavern only three townships away. Neither of them should have been there (I had, in fact, sent him in the opposite direction) but there you have it. She didn't bother to send a message back with the drunken messenger but instead snuck into town and let her sister in the kitchen know of her presence and to alert me that she wished to speak with me.

Durring the nine days it took the messenger to get to her I was busy. I was trying to figure out where I would go if I couldn't contact Penryn and when I should give up on her and bolt. I knew it could take months and that if I had to leave before she knew about it I may not ever be able to reach her. Being young I decided not to worry about that (luckily I didn't have to but I didn't know that yet) and I started watching the stables for a time when a horse could be stolen.

Now, I've told you that we were central in this war-mongering that was going on to fight off the Northerners but I may not have told you why. I'm getting lost in my narrative, Beatrix. Don't worry though the boring set up is almost over and the action and romance is about to start. The reason why we were so central was partly because of our location and partly because we had the best horses and horsemen. So as you can imagine, the horse were guarded very well. To well for me to get my hands on one without an accomplice within the guard. I needed help and then it finally dawned on me that I might be able to convince Bolan.

I didn't want him to get in trouble so I had to come up with a plan to get the horse on someone else's watch perhaps using him as a distraction. No matter what the plan I was sure it would take some convincing so I started in on him right away. The next time I went down to the stables I pulled him aside. Nothing suspicious there since I was about the only person who could stand him and often enlisted his help for things like elaborate practical jokes on pompous army captains. I told you I was trouble. We were good enough that though everyone knew it was one or both of us no one could ever prove it. Not even a little bit. Anyway, I told him how I planned to leave and that I had everything I needed except the horse.

"You want me to help you steal a horse?" he asked, scrunching up his eyebrows like he was in pain.

"Well... yes I suppose that's what it ammounts to," I replied as stoically as possible.

"Do you know how hard it would be to steal a horse from here?" he countered, roll9ing his eyes a bit.

"Moderately?" I asked feigning ignorance.

"Oh, moderately. Moderately. Mmm-hmm. Alright, no problem then," was the snarky response.

"So? Will you help me do it? It would be a challenge," I said attempting to bait him.

"Of course I will. You know I can't resist the oppertunity to make any of the captains look rediculous. In fact, I already have a plan..."

And did he ever, Beatrix! Not only did he have a plan that could get me a horse but it would completely humiliate the Horse Captain who was a drunk jerk most of the time (to clarify, the rest of the time he was a lecherous twit). Actually, it wasn't much of a plan. It was mostly just drugging the Horse Captain so that we could take a horse on his watch but still, there was a bit of cunning that would be involved in getting a whole horse out of the grounds unseen, or rather, unnoticed.

So, as you can see, when Penryn's sister gave me word of her presence, I was already ready to go but Penryn had concerns. She was afraid that I wouldn't be prepared for life outside of a palace. She was afraid that I might treat her as a servant. She was afraid my father might think I was kidnapped or that if he found out I was with her she would be in serious trouble. I did my best to ease her concerns and after a few days I convinced her. I told her of my plan to not be noticed and how I had already made plans to get a horse. She told me of a few other things I should pack and that we should be on our way as soon as possible since sooner or later someone would discover that she was around.

Everything was going pretty much according to my plan. In fact everything went perfectly until I had made it just outside of town, horse and all. That's when it all started to fall apart...

It begins now!

I have out of town guests coming in March. A little over a month from now. The last time I saw K- I was a size 12, the last time I saw D- I was a size 10. As of this minute I can squeeze into a 14. I've got my motivation, it's time. I'm going to be as close to a 12 as possible by the time they get here. I will be a 12 by my birthday in April and I will be in a 10 by the time I have to wear a bathing suit. I would be totally happy with a 10.

I don't care about the actual number of pounds, I just want to be comfortable in the clothes that a person of my height (5'2"ish) should be wearing. Granted as shot as I am I should be aiming for a 6 or an 8 but I'm realistic and I like to have a little bit of curves.

So here's then plan:
1) Stop eating crap. No more junk food and if I feel that I just have to have some, I will eat one piece of pizza instead of four, or one peanut butter cup instead of a bag.
2) Get off my ass! Exercize EVERYDAY even if that just means doing ten reps of Lola Beans Lifts and a run around the yard. I will do a half hour on the bike at least three times a week and I will try to do some of that pilates at least twice a week.
3) No sodas except one a day on weekends. No alcohol except for special occasions.
4) Snacks will be healthy. I will eat breakfast instead of a bunch of Cheeze-Its at 9:30.
5) Get a jump start from a supplement that has good reviews and is not promoted by Anna Nicole Smith. Thanks to Red Todd Kidd and his research we're going to try out Lean System 7 wich thus far this morning has not made me jittery like a "diet pill" usually would. I admit I want to get up and do something (awesome!) but I don't feel shakey and weird.

So that's the plan! I'm so confident that I'm going to stick to it that I'm actually going to post a full length "before" picture. Ew! Workout wear is about the most unflattering stuff ever, eh? My arms look HUGE! EW! Okay, I'm posting it anyway because I'm about to look hot. Wish me luck!

Woohoo!

Steelers won the Super Bowl! At first I didn't think they came to play but when they finally got on a roll... It was awesome. Being with some real Steelers fans when it all went down was a fun experience. Great day, great day.

Oh, and I put Lola Beans' hair in little pigtails for the first time yesterday. Too cute. I have a better pic but it from before she put on her steeler shirt. I also have a cute on of her demolishing a Klondike bar. Okay, I'll post em. Hang on.

Bandwagon?

On the knittyboard Zib came across this quiz and I thought that it was a bit lame. So I decided to do something about it and made a quiz for my own amusement and as it turned out the other knitties were amused too. So now here it is for your amusement (with my results):

Bette Davis
Bette Davis

You rule the roost no matter where that roost is.
Not only are you brainy and beautiful but in
another life you could have been a dictator.
Way to go, you!

Aggravation

So there's supposed to be a story installment today but I have a very good reason why there's not. The reason is Tychus. As you could see from the pictures I finished Tychus yesterday. I also started it yesterday. The pattern is nice enough, easy to memorize for mindless tv knitting. The thing is I swatched and still ended up with the most ginormous hat ever. To big even for my big headed husband (seriously, the man wears huge hats).

This morning after picking up all my knitting supplies from last night I realized why the hat is so large. I was using one size 9 needle and one size 10. Somewhere between the swatching and the actual knitting I switched one of the needles. I think it was when Lola Beans pulled the hat off the needles and dumped my basket of junk on the floor while I was trying to assess the damage to the burned pizza sauce in the kitchen. That was fun.

So now I have this Steelers/Iowa/Bumblebee hat that would fit Jimmy Neutron if he were a real person. What do I do? Do I spend all day today making a hat of the proper size or do I take it as a sign and forget the whole thing? Is there a charity called the Big Headed Hat Foundation that provides huge hats to those with huge heads? I don't know, I just... Don't. Know.

By the way, have you ever tried to take a picture of the top of your own head? Not as easy as you might think.
